Local teenagers learn photography skills from “inspirational” professional

A world-renowned photographer shared his skills with Loughborough Junction teenagers this February half term. Giles Duley, 42, shared his photography knowledge with four young people, aged from 14-18, from Loughborough Junction, three of whom lived on the Milkwood Estate.

The teenagers spent the week taking portraits of local artists and makers that will be displayed in an open-air exhibition in June. Giles Duley will be returning to the area soon to take further portraits, which will be displayed at the same exhibition.

Kalina Gordon, 18, Zulieka Taylor, 18, Amy Finch, 14 and Hayden Martin, 16 all thoroughly enjoyed the course. Zulieka, who is studying for an A level in Photography at the moment, said “I wanted to do photography anyway but this has made up my mind for me. Giles was inspirational and his own story was really interesting.”

Duley made his name as a music photographer in the 1990s before travelling the word to photograph humanitarian stories often in areas of conflict. In 2011 he lost both legs and his left arm after stepping on an explosive device in Afghanistan. Despite this he has continued working as a photographer, and has travelled to Jordan and Syria recently.

The project was organised by LJAG in conjunction with the Milkwood Residents Association and Photofusion Gallery and was funded by the Arts Council and Lambeth Council.
