WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THE LIBRARY

Minet library has re-opened as a “neighbourhood library” after a year’s closure. The library is now open up to eight hours a day with librarians available up to two hours a day.

The council plans to move Lambeth Archives to a new site in Kennington Lane.  Lambeth Council has committed to work with Friends of Minet Library to develop the building in readiness for the archive move.

Cllr Sonia Winifred, cabinet member for equalities and culture, said: “I am delighted that Minet is providing a library service again. It will be around four years before the Archives move and in the meantime it’s important to make sure the right decision is made on the future of the Minet Building.   The Council will certainly work with the Friends of Minet in the decision making process, and also in delivering the library in the short-medium term.”

The library offers free secure wifi, books, computers (two at present but another seven to be added in April), DVDs, children’s story time and a reading group, but this is just the start.

Chair of the group, Victoria Sherwin, said: “We know that people in this area need a library more than ever – many do not have access to computers, there are very few indoor spaces and young people desperately need a quiet space in which to study.

“We will do everything we can to improve the library in the short term, and to work towards providing what the community fully needs in the longer term.  This could mean bringing in new funding to redevelop the building so it meets local needs and can generate income to fund a full library service”.
