A lorry delivering milk outside Tesco on Coldharbour Lane causes traffic chaos
Lorries delivering to the new Tesco store on Coldharbour Lane are causing traffic chaos. Vehicles pulling out to overtake large delivery lorries on a bend with poor visibility are a serious safety issue for both themselves, other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. It is not only this safety issue that is causing problems however with Loughborough Junction residents complaining of being held up on buses stuck behind the lorries.
Anyone who regularly passes the store, which is near the junction with Shakespeare Road, will have seen the problems – see photographs above and below.
Tesco do have permission for up to three deliveries of this size a day – but the Council claims that when the agreement (known as a Servicing Management Plan) was made, officers had no idea that the tenant of the former Warrior pub would be a store of this type and therefore did not expect so many large deliveries.
Local councillor, Rachel Heywood, has taken this up with the planning department after receiving a formal complaint from a local resident. The planning department has promised to take this up with Tesco and if agreement can not be reached it will then “look at reviewing and, if appropriate, amending the existing waiting restrictions on Coldharbour Lane.”
Cllr Heywood said: “I am so pleased, as will be local residents, that we are in a position to resolve this situation. I am also pleased to hear that lessons have been learned which I hope will prevent similar cases arising in the future. Personally, I think we need to be really tough as we see more and more of these ‘local’ stores appearing in our neighbourhoods with behaviours (and vehicles) that are quite different from what we might expect.”
